# How Can I Bring My Foreign Aged Parent Into Singapore? Exploring the Available Immigration Passes

Explore the options to bring your foreign aged parent to Singapore. Learn about the immigration passes available and the application process in our guide.

TLDR:

- Singapore citizens and PRs can sponsor their own parents for an ICA Long-Term Visit Pass (LTVP). Parents-in-law are not eligible.[[1]](#source-1)

- Only a Singapore citizen aged 21 or over can sponsor an aged parent for permanent residence. PRs cannot.[[3]](#source-3)

- Employment Pass and S Pass holders need a fixed monthly salary of at least S$12,000 to bring parents on a MOM LTVP. One parent or grandparent of a Student’s Pass holder can apply for an ICA LTVP.[[4]](#source-4)[[2]](#source-2)

Bringing an ageing parent to live with you in Singapore depends almost entirely on your own status here. Citizens, PRs, work pass holders and students each have a different route, with different sponsors, rules and benefits.

This page covers the routes for parents. For the LTVP in general, including the full document list and process, use the [Singapore LTVP application guide](/articles/singapore-long-term-visit-pass-ltvp-guide).

Unsure whether your case goes to ICA or MOM? The [ICA vs MOM LTVP guide](/articles/understanding-differences-in-ltvp-from-ica-and-mom) explains how the sponsor decides.

## If you are a Singapore citizen or PR: the ICA LTVP

A parent of a Singapore citizen or PR can apply for an LTVP through ICA. Parents-in-law cannot.[[1]](#source-1)

If you are 21 or older, you sponsor your parent’s application yourself through ICA e-Service using Singpass. If you are under 21, another Singapore citizen or PR aged 21 or over must sponsor it.[[1]](#source-1) Every applicant must review the form before it can be submitted, using Singpass or login details ICA provides, and Singpass approval can take 2 to 5 working days.[[5]](#source-5)

ICA LTVP for a parent
Details

Fees
S$45 when you apply, S$60 when the pass is issued, plus S$30 for a Multiple Journey Visa if needed[[1]](#source-1)

Processing time
Within 6 weeks if all documents are in order; some take longer[[1]](#source-1)

Documents
Originals, with official English translations of anything in another language, following ICA’s checklist for a parent[[1]](#source-1)

Renewal
Apply at least 3 months before the pass expires[[5]](#source-5)

Work
Allowed on a Work Permit, counted only under the employer’s overall quota[[6]](#source-6)

ICA looks at the whole family profile, including family ties to Singaporeans, age and length of residency, so approval is not automatic.[[5]](#source-5) The LTVP must be renewed, and each renewal depends on you continuing to sponsor. Our [LTVP for parents FAQ](/faq/ltvp/ltvp-for-parents) answers the common questions.

## If you are a Singapore citizen: PR for an aged parent

A Singapore citizen aged 21 or over can sponsor an aged parent for permanent residence.[[3]](#source-3)

Your citizen child sponsors the PR application through ICA e-Service using Singpass.[[3]](#source-3) PR gives your parent a permanent right to live in Singapore and access to the healthcare subsidies available to PRs, which an LTVP does not. Approval is assessed case by case.

Singapore PRs cannot sponsor their parents for PR. For a PR’s parents, the LTVP is usually the long-term option. A PR who later becomes a Singapore citizen can then sponsor an aged parent for PR. Our [citizenship service](/services/singapore-citizenship) and [PR service](/services/singapore-pr) can help you plan both steps.

## If you hold an Employment Pass or S Pass: a MOM LTVP at S$12,000+

You can bring your parents on a MOM LTVP only if you earn a fixed monthly salary of at least S$12,000.[[4]](#source-4)

You must also hold an Employment Pass or S Pass and be sponsored by an established Singapore-registered company, usually your employer. The salary test is your own fixed salary, not household income.[[4]](#source-4) Your employer or its employment agent applies through MOM’s EP eService, with a separate application for each parent.[[7]](#source-7) MOM charges S$105 to apply and S$225 when the pass is issued, and processes most applications within 3 weeks.[[7]](#source-7)

Below S$12,000 there is no MOM long-stay pass for parents. A parent on a MOM LTVP can only work if they qualify for their own work pass.[[8]](#source-8) Our [LTVP vs Dependant’s Pass guide](/articles/long-term-visit-pass-vs-dependants-pass-in-singapore) covers the other family passes for work pass holders.

## If your child or grandchild studies here: the ICA LTVP for a student’s parent or grandparent

One parent or grandparent of a child on a Student’s Pass can apply, with a local sponsor.[[2]](#source-2)

Only one applicant per child is allowed, either a parent or a grandparent. A Singapore citizen or PR aged 21 or over must sponsor the application through ICA e-Service.[[2]](#source-2) ICA asks for the student’s birth certificate, the birth certificates or household register and marriage certificate of the student’s parents, any divorce or custody papers, and a letter from the student’s school.[[2]](#source-2)

The parent or grandparent cannot work during their first year here. After a year, an employer can apply for a Work Permit for them.[[6]](#source-6) See our [student’s parent LTVP FAQ](/faq/ltvp/ltvp-parent-of-student-pass-holder) for more.

## Plan for healthcare, money and housing before your parent arrives

An LTVP lets your parent live here, but it does not bring public healthcare subsidies.

- Healthcare: an LTVP does not come with public healthcare subsidies. Even for foreign spouses of citizens, the government extended inpatient subsidies only to LTVP+ holders.[[9]](#source-9) Private health insurance that covers an older person matters. Parents who become PRs can access PR subsidy rates.

- Money: as sponsor, be ready to show that you can support your parent’s stay, with clear evidence of your income and savings.

- Housing: think about access, lifts and distance to clinics and public transport, especially if your parent has mobility or health needs.

If an earlier application was refused, read [why LTVP applications are rejected](/articles/why-my-long-term-visit-pass-ltvp-application-was-rejected-key-reasons-and-solutions) before you reapply.
